Edit caption text and timing
Fix caption words, choose how many words show at once, merge or split caption lines, and keep captions in time with speech in the Videospan editor.
Captions are grouped into short lines automatically. In the captions workspace you can fix words, change where lines break, and fine-tune timing.
Steps
- Open a video that has captions and select Edit.
- Select the captions track, then Make Detailed Edits.
- To show more words at a time, increase Words per group, then select Apply to all.
- Double-click a caption to fix its text, then press Command Enter (Ctrl Enter on Windows) to save it.
- Hover over a caption and select Merge ↓ to join it with the next one, or Split to break it after any word.
- Select Done to go back to the editor.
Good to know
- Each card is one caption. It shows the words that appear on screen together, their timing, and a reading speed label such as Readable or Too fast.
- Fixes reach the transcript. Text you correct in a caption is saved to the video's transcript too.
- Timing stays in sync. Snap words to speech keeps every word lined up with the original audio, even after you edit.
- Quality check. The panel on the right counts long groups, fast reading speeds and timing overlaps so you can spot problems quickly.

Captions are grouped into short lines automatically. In the captions workspace you can fix words, change where lines break, and fine-tune timing. Open a video that has captions and select Edit. Select the captions track, then Make Detailed Edits. Each card is one caption group: the words that appear on screen together, with their timing and how easy they are to read. To show more words at a time, increase Words per group, then select Apply to all. The word timing stays the same. Double-click a caption to fix its text. Here we spell out the number five. Press Command Enter to save it. The fix is saved to the transcript too. Hover over a caption for more options. Merge joins it with the next one, so the whole sentence shows at once. Split breaks a caption after any word you choose. Snap words to speech keeps every word lined up with the original audio, even after you edit. Select Done to go back to the editor. Your caption changes are saved with the rest of your edit.
