Add B-roll to a video

Cut away to supporting footage in a Videospan video: add B-roll from your assets or licensed stock, trim it, and play it over the speaker.

B-roll is supporting footage that plays over your video while the speaker keeps talking. It keeps viewers watching and shows what the speaker is describing.

Watch: Add B-roll to a video (1:23)

Steps

  1. Open a video and select Edit.
  2. Select Video. My Assets holds your organization's footage, including clips you've licensed before.
  3. Select a clip to add it. It goes on a new track above your video, covering the speaker while their voice keeps playing.
  4. Play to where you want the B-roll to end, and pause.
  5. Select the B-roll, then Split at Playhead, and delete the part you don't need.
  6. Play it back to check the cutaway.

Good to know

  • Stock footage. On the Stock tab, search for a clip, select it, then select Acquire License to add it to My Assets.
  • Keep it short. B-roll works best in bursts of a few seconds. Drag its ends to trim it, or drag it along the track to start later.
  • Images work too. Use Images the same way to show a still photo or graphic over the speaker.
